The assumption that there is a receiver possible of receiving 
At the other end of the Pacific, attentive 

And quiet like the silence trailing 
After an exhausted dial tone—a blank address, waiting 

To be filled with numbers and words 
And curves crooked like an invitation—

Is almost hopeful.
